Cyclam-functionalized silica-modified electrodes for selective determination of Cu(II)

2009

Cyclam derivatives have been grafted via 1, 2 or 4 silylated arms to the surface of mesoporous silica and the resulting materials have been incorporated into carbon paste electrodes and applied to the preconcentration electroanalysis of Cu(II). Sensitive and selective detection of the target analyte was achieved owing to the attractive binding properties of this macrocyclic ligand towards Cu(II) species. Various parameters likely to affect the preconcentration and detection steps have been studied, including pH of the accumulation medium, composition of the detection solution, structure and composition of the adsorbent, accumulation time, or presence of potentially interfering species. In p…

Microbial environmental contamination in Italian dental clinics: A multicenter study yielding recommendations for standardized sampling methods and t…

2012

A microbiological environmental investigation was carried out in ten dental clinics in Italy. Microbial contamination of water, air and surfaces was assessed in each clinic during the five working days, for one week per month, for a three-month period. Water and surfaces were sampled before and after clinical activity; air was sampled before, after, and during clinical activity. A wide variation was found in microbial environmental contamination, both within the participating clinics and for the different sampling times. Before clinical activity, microbial water contamination in tap water reached 51,200cfu/mL (colony forming units per milliliter), and that in Dental Unit Water Systems (DUWS…

Microplastics in water, from treatment process to drinking water: analytical methods and potential health effects

2022

[Aim]: The commonly used analytical methods for microplastic (MPs) detection in drinking water and the threat of MP pollution in water intended for human consumption to human beings are presented through a systematic review. Furthermore, MP occurrence, transport, and fate from raw to treated drinking water, tap water, and bottled water, as well as the possible health impacts of MPs on human beings, are also evaluated. [Methods]: Systematic review included articles published in scientific journals that contain specific keywords in the title and were searched in Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus. The literature was selected and extracted by two reviewers based on the PRISMA-A guidelines, which …

Evidence of regional differences in chlorine perception by consumers: sensitivity differences or habituation?

2014

Chlorinous flavors are a leading cause of customers9 dissatisfaction with drinking water. Potential differences in chlorine perception were investigated by conducting sensory testing experiments in France and Spain to assess consumers9 sensory sensitivity (chlorine flavor detection threshold and supra-threshold intensity) as well as their liking of and acceptability for chlorinated solutions. In both countries, two groups of panelists were constituted based on their water drinking habits (tap vs. bottled water). Chlorine flavor detection threshold was found to vary depending on countries (0.17 mg/L Cl 2 in France and 0.56 mg/L Cl 2 in Spain). Taking into account that mean flavor detection t…

Waterborne Norovirus outbreak at a seaside resort likely originating from municipal water distribution system failure

2018

AbstractIn May 2016 a Norovirus (NoV) gastroenteritis outbreak involved a high school class visiting a seaside resort near Taormina (Mascali, Sicily). Twenty-four students and a teacher were affected and 17 of them showed symptoms on the second day of the journey, while the others got ill within the following 2 days. Symptoms included vomiting, diarrhoea and fever, and 12 students required hospitalisation. Stool samples tested positive for NoV genome by Real-Time polymerase chain reaction assay in all 25 symptomatic subjects. The GII.P2/GII.2 NoV genotype was linked to the outbreak by ORF1/ORF2 sequence analysis. The epidemiological features of the outbreak were consistent with food/waterbo…

Comparison of Methods and Kits for Colorimetric Determination of Residual Chlorine in Water

1997

Abstract The use of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for residual chlorine determination in water offers 2 possibilities, one at pH 1-2 and absorbance measurement at 450 nm and another at pH 3.8-5.8 and measurement at 650 nm. The reaction of chlorine with TMB reaches its maximum sensitivity at pH 1-2. The detection limit is 2 ng/mL. A calibrated scale for colorimetric determination of residual chlorine in water with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), prepared with tropaeolin O (C.I. 14270), is described. This scale is stable for several months and can be useful in replacing the conventional and much less stable scale prepared from standard solutions of oxochlorate (I). Kits for deter…

QSPR prediction of retention times of phenylurea herbicides by biological plastic evolution.

2012

A simple/sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method, with ultraviolet (UV) detection, was developed for phenylurea-herbicide analysis, which involves preconcentration using solid-phase extraction. Mobile phase was acetonitrile/water at flow-rate of 1 mL.min-1 with direct UV absorbance detection at 210 nm. Analyte separation studied on a C18 column was applied successfully to herbicide analysis in soft drink's brands and tap water. Good linearity/repeatability was observed for all pesticides. Retention times increase as: metoxuron < monuron < diuron < matazachlor < linuron. They are modelled by structure-property relations. The effect of different types of features is analyzed:…

Formation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichloroanisole during treatment and distribution of drinking water

1995

Biomethylation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol to the potent off-flavour compound 2,4,6-trichloroanisole has previously been found to cause taste and odour problems in drinking water. In the present study, both compounds were detected in seemingly unpolluted surface waters. However, the highest concentrations of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole in tap water were caused by the formation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol during chlorine disinfection of drinking water and subsequent methylation of this compound in the distribution system. Analysis of samples from several sites in the investigated distribution systems showed that there was a substantial spatial and temporal variation of the concentration of both 2,4,6-t…

Liquid chromatographic determination of aliphatic amines in water using solid support assisted derivatization with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate

2002

A simple and sensitive method has been developed for the liquid chromatographic determination of short-chain aliphatic amines in water. Analytes are retained in solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges, and then derivatized by drawing an aliquot of the fluorogeneic reagent 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC) through the cartridges. After a certain reaction time the derivatives formed are desorbed with acetonitrile. The collected extracts are then chromatographed on a LiChrospher 100 RP18 125 mm×4 mm i.d., 5 μm, column using an acetonitrile-water gradient. The influence of experimental conditions (SPE material, volume of sample, concentration of FMOC, time of reaction and pH) has been inve…
